Diversity in Ownership
Marriott International’s overall commitment to diversity starts with Executive Chairman J.W. Marriott, Jr., who is a strong advocate for and supporter of the company’s diversity efforts. Diversity permeates throughout Marriott’s ownership base, workforce, and suppliers, which is in large part attributable to Mr. Marriott’s dedication. As a result, Marriott is seen to have one of the most broadly diverse ownership portfolios in the industry.
Marriott’s Diverse Ownership Initiative launched in 2005 and was created to introduce successful minority and women business owners to the hotel industry. Today, more than 800 Marriott hotels are owned by minorities and women, with a goal of 1,000, or 25% of the existing Marriott global hotel portfolio, by 2020.
Our commitment to diversity continues to grow as we forge even deeper relationships with the industry’s best partners; Women, Asian American, Native American, African American, Latino, Hispanic, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender owned companies and individuals. Our support and affiliation has grown with organizations such as the Odyssey Network, the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators and Developers, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, the Taiwanese Hotel and Motel Owner Association, the Latino Hotel & Restaurant Association and the National Black MBA Association. To attract aspiring diverse owners and franchisees, the company hosts educational summits that highlight how prospective sites are evaluated and how hotels are built, financed and operated.
